Eugen d'Albert (1864 - 1932) was born to German parents in Glasgow, Scotland. His father, also a musician, lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years. Eugen studied under his father and others and in 1881 went to Germany, where in Weimar he became a pupil of Franz Liszt who, together with Anton Rubenstein promoted him to his career as concert pianist and composer. He enjoyed great fame performing throughout Europe. Later he concentrated on composing, notable operas. His 1898 opera Die Abreise was his first success, followed by Tiefland which was enormously popular
