Emil Orlik: Stilleben mit Obst, Blumen und einem Fasan - Still life with fruit, flowers and a pheasant
woodcut extensively coloured with gouache, c.1905 Sheet Size: 44.5 x 49.5 cm - (17½ x 19½ inches) signed in pink crayon by Orlik, lower left and by Charlotte Rollins in white, lower right
how many of this remarkable colour woodcut were printed is not known ; only about 10 impressions have appeared on the market during the past 20 years; the cutting of the block was the culmination of Orlik's artistry in the medium and it was the largest woodcut he made; each impression was hand water-coloured with the collaboration of Charlotte Rollins, an artist about whom little is known; she is believed to have been English and to have been active in Berlin in the early part of the 20th century; a few hand water-coloured woodcuts of her own are known but her main claim to fame is the painting of this print; each impression has subtle differences in colouring, particularly of the wall in the background and in the flowers on the pot plant
printed almost to the edges of the sheet of very thin japan paper, with fresh bright colours in remarkably good condition as the edges of the sheet have been protected by a thin band of tape verso (possibly at the time the print was made)
