Orlik's great friend Gerhardt Hauptmann (1862 - 1946) who gave up his early career as a sculptor to become one of Germany's leading dramatists, known for his plays of social protest, dealing realistically with the conditions of the working class. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1912. Orlik painted and etched many portraits of Hauptmann and scenes from his plays.
